OVERBERG – As the wine industry continues to thrive, recycling wine bottles becomes increasingly important for landfill reduction and environmental responsibility. Here’s how you can contribute to this important initiative:
Wine bottles boast impressive recycling potential. Undamaged bottles undergo a meticulous cleaning and inspection process at bottle-washing facilities, after which they are returned to wineries for reuse. Damaged bottles, instead of ending up in landfills, are sent for recycling to create new glass products.
Within the Overstrand Municipality, over 20,000 wine bottles are recovered monthly. Your actions can increase this number even further. By placing empty wine bottles in clear recycling bags or dropping off larger quantities at designated Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), you help keep them out of landfills.
“Please keep on recycling your wine bottles in order for the wine industry to keep glass wine bottles in circulation as this prevents them landing in the landfills,” emphasizes the Overstrand Municipality.
How You Can Get Involved:
- Recycle: Utilize clear recycling bags provided by your municipality or drop off bottles directly at MRFs.
- Support Sustainable Wineries: Look for wineries prioritizing recycled bottles for their products.
Learn More:
- Contact your local municipality for details on their recycling program.
- Visit the Overstrand Municipality website for information on Material Recovery Facility locations and operational hours.
Let’s make enjoying a glass of wine a little greener!
