WC Makes First Payout in Illegal Firearm Reward Program

Michael Hawthorne

A citizen in the Gansbaai area received an R3000 reward on February 28, 2024, for reporting an illegal firearm in December 2023. This tip led to the confiscation of a .38 Revolver, ammunition, and the arrest of a suspect. The payout marks the first under the Western Cape’s illegal firearm reporting program.

The Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, expressed his gratitude to the citizen for their bravery in reporting the firearm. “This partnership between the Western Cape Government and our residents is essential to keeping our province safe. We’re ready to reward more citizens who come forward with information about illegal firearms,” Minister Allen said.

“This is an outstanding act of bravery from a community member,” Minister Allen added.

The tipoff to the Gansbaai South African Police Services (SAPS) station highlights the successful collaboration between law enforcement and the community.

The reward system offers up to R5000 for reporting illegal firearms and encourages citizens to call 021 466 0011. Residents can choose to remain anonymous.

Minister Allen emphasized the severity of gun violence in the Western Cape, citing that 57.5% of murders in the province during the third quarter of 2023 involved firearms. The government aims to halve the murder rate by 2029 and sees this reward program as a critical tool in achieving that goal.
