Urgent Search Underway for Missing Indian Sailor in Algoa Bay

Michael Hawthorne

GQEBERHA – A desperate search is ongoing for a 31-year-old Indian sailor missing at sea in Algoa Bay. Authorities are appealing to mariners and the public for assistance in locating the man.

The man was a crew member on a container motor vessel that sounded a “man overboard” alarm on Saturday, March 2nd, between 17:00 and 18:00 SAST. The incident is believed to have occurred approximately 6 nautical miles off-shore, east of Cape Recife.

An extensive search of the vessel found no trace of the missing man, leading authorities to believe he went overboard.

Extensive Search Efforts

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gqeberha, South African Police Services, and Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were alerted immediately. A comprehensive search operation was launched, with the NSRI Gqeberha rescue craft joining the effort at first light on Sunday. An all-ships alert was also broadcast across the area.

Despite the ongoing search, there are no signs of the missing man.

Appeal for Assistance

Authorities are requesting mariners in Algoa Bay and surrounding areas, along with members of the public on the Gqeberha shoreline, to remain vigilant and report any sightings that might assist in the search.

The NSRI, in a statement, expressed their thoughts for the family of the missing man and his fellow crew members during this difficult time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the relevant maritime authorities.
