ATHLONE – In a bid to enhance road safety conditions and ensure a smoother driving experience, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has officially kicked off the resurfacing of roads in Newfields, located in the Athlone area. The ambitious project is set to commence today, 19 February 2024, and is expected to conclude by Tuesday, 12 March 2024, barring any unforeseen delays.
The roadworks will take place on weekdays between 08:00 and 15:30, with no disruptions planned for nights or weekends. To alleviate potential traffic congestion during construction hours, the City has implemented detour plans to redirect traffic away from the affected areas. The resurfacing efforts will encompass Athwood Road, Lodewyk Road (from Surran Road to 90 Lodewyk Road), Dirk Adams Road, Algoa Road, Alleman Road, and Gideon Road (stretching from Dirk Adams Road to Athwood Road).
Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, expressed gratitude to road users for their patience during the inconvenience of roadworks. He emphasized the positive aspects of the project, stating, “Much as we do not like the inconvenience of roadworks, we all actually love the feeling of driving on newly resurfaced roads. I wish to thank the road users for their patience while work is underway. The benefit of newly resurfaced roads includes improved road safety conditions, better drive quality, as well as decreased vehicle user costs.”
Residents are advised to seek alternative routes during the specified period, and it’s noted that some noise pollution may occur. The City urges cooperation from the community, highlighting the long-term advantages that come with the temporary inconvenience. As the resurfacing project unfolds, the City of Cape Town remains committed to fostering safer, more efficient road networks for the benefit of all.
