CAPE TOWN – Kuils River residents, get ready for some traffic relief! The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has started extending Saxdowns Road from Langverwacht Road to Van Riebeeck Road. This long-awaited project is part of the City’s strategy to ease traffic woes in the area.
“The Saxdowns Road extension will create a vital new link between Bottelary Road in the north and Van Riebeeck Road in the south,” said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.
The project started with minor works in recent weeks, with major roadworks taking place between 07:30 and 17:30 on weekdays and some Saturdays if needed. Barring any hiccups, the project should be finished in late 2025.
Councillor Quintas explained, “When completed, this single carriageway will close the gap in Saxdowns Road, providing improved road access and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in this fast-growing neighbourhood.”
The improvements include:
- Extending Saxdowns Road as a single carriageway from Langverwacht Road to Van Riebeeck Road, with dual lanes at those intersections.
- Building accessible sidewalks on both sides of the road.
- Adding a bicycle lane.
- Installing a new traffic light at the Van Riebeeck Road intersection.
- Street lighting.
- Adding a large stormwater pipe along Van Riebeeck Road.
Councillor Quintas reminded residents, “We’ll have signs up around the construction site, but please keep clear of the area. Your patience and cooperation are much appreciated.”
The Cape Navigator and the City will keep locals updated as the project moves forward.
