In a bid to enhance urban mobility and alleviate traffic congestion, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has announced the temporary closure of Pandoer Street in Bellville. The closure, effective from Friday, 16 February 2024, to Saturday, 20 July 2024, is part of the ongoing upgrade of Jip de Jager Drive into a dual carriageway, aligned with the City’s Congestion Management Strategy.
The affected stretch of Pandoer Street spans from Jip de Jager Drive to Kommandeur Street in Welgemoed, impacting both motorists and pedestrians. Alternative routes have been suggested for those seeking access to Jip de Jager Drive during this period. Motorists are encouraged to use Dragoon Avenue, Jorgensens Avenue, and Van Riebeeckshof Road, or opt for Cameronians Avenue, Wylant Street, Chavonne Street, Murray Street, and Jameson Road between Jip de Jager Drive and Cameronians Avenue.
Expressing gratitude for the public’s patience during the upgrade, City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, stated, “It has been a long time coming, and we also look forward to seeing traffic congestion relief once the work is done.” He further urged motorists to adhere to road closure and detour signage and advised using alternative routes wherever possible, anticipating increased traffic volumes during morning and afternoon peak hours in the affected area.
This temporary closure forms a crucial part of the City’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving traffic flow. The upgrade of Jip de Jager Drive is expected to bring about significant positive changes, providing a smoother and more efficient commuting experience for residents and businesses in Bellville. The City of Cape Town assures that every effort is being made to minimize disruptions during this period and encourages cooperation from the public in ensuring a successful execution of the road upgrade project.
