In a significant milestone for Mitchells Plain, the City’s Human Settlements Directorate continues to make strides in the provision of homeownership opportunities. Following the success of the Festive Deeds Challenge last year, the Directorate, led by Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, celebrated another round of title deed handovers in Tafelsig on 7 February 2024.

Councillor Pophaim expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing efforts, stating, “We succeeded in our mission to create almost 1,500 new homeowners in the last few months of 2023. I am so excited to continue along this journey of creating even more homeowners through handing over keys and deeds. We are shifting to the highest possible gear in 2024 and ensuring our ambitious targets are met.”

The handover ceremony in Tafelsig was a joyous occasion, as beneficiaries and their families celebrated this life-changing event. Councillor Pophaim emphasized the transformative impact of providing access to tenure, stating, “Access to tenure is life-changing and brings dignity to residents and their loved ones for many generations to come. Thank you to our teams for making this possible.”

The Human Settlements Directorate currently holds more than 12,000 title deeds on its registry, and additional resources have been allocated to enhance beneficiary tracking and tracing. An impressive R21.6 million has been earmarked for this purpose, underlining the commitment to empowering individuals through homeownership.

Councillor Pophaim urged residents to spread the news about the Directorate’s goal of creating more homeowners. He stated, “We are passionate about empowering beneficiaries, and we encourage residents to spread the news about our goal of creating more homeowners.”

Beneficiaries who have not yet received a deed are encouraged to visit the Cape Town Civic Centre Customer Service Centre at 12 Hertzog Boulevard, Second Floor, Foreshore, Cape Town. Alternatively, they can contact the Directorate at 021 400 2008.

As the City’s Human Settlements Directorate forges ahead in its mission, the vision of building strong, empowered communities through homeownership becomes a reality for the residents of Mitchells Plain.
