WESTONARIA – A seismic event with a magnitude of 3.2 struck near Bekkersdal in Gauteng, South Africa, at precisely 20:54:08 on February 6, 2024. The quake occurred very close to Panvlakte, a mere 200 meters from the R93 road near Westonaria, at a depth of 5 kilometres below the ground.

The tremor, although considered mild, caught residents in the region off guard as South Africa is not typically known for frequent seismic activity.

The epicentre of the earthquake was identified at coordinates 26°16’08.4″S latitude and 27°42’57.6″E longitude.

While a magnitude 3.2 earthquake is considered relatively minor, it serves as a reminder for communities to be prepared and aware of natural events that may occur unexpectedly.
