CAPE TOWN – In a significant announcement, the Western Cape Government has named Dr Shaheem De Vries as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Groote Schuur Hospital, effective from February 1, 2024.
Bringing a wealth of leadership and clinical experience, Dr De Vries is set to lead the Groote Schuur Hospital team of nearly 3600 dedicated staff members on a journey of innovation, collaboration, compassion, and excellence in patient care. His commitment is aimed at ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality healthcare services.
Dr De Vries holds a medical degree, a diploma in Primary Emergency Care, a Master’s Degree in Emergency Medicine, and an MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business. His impressive track record in healthcare includes serving as the Director of Emergency Medical Services from 2013 to 2022 and the Clinical Medical Manager for Emergency Medical Services from 2022 to 2023.
Notably, Dr De Vries has a special interest in African emergency care systems, having been an active member of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM) since its inception. He served as its CEO from 2017 to 2019, and his expertise has been sought by the World Health Organisation as a pre-hospital expert in Emergency Care Systems.
Congratulating Dr De Vries on his appointment, Western Cape Minister for Health and Wellness Professor Nomafrench Mbombo expressed confidence in his ability to build on the hospital’s legacy. She stated, “We wish Dr De Vries all the best as he embarks on a journey of service and stewardship at Groote Schuur Hospital. May his tenure be marked by many successes and a lasting legacy maintaining the important role Groote Schuur plays in the healthcare system.”
Dr Keith Cloete, Head of the Department of Health and Wellness, echoed these sentiments, stating, “We are confident that Dr De Vries will be an invaluable addition to our senior leadership team and pivotal in continuing Groote Schuur Hospital’s legacy of being a world-leader in health care provision.”
Expressing his gratitude for the appointment, Dr De Vries said, “I consider it an honour to be selected as the steward of such a quintessential symbol of our commitment to healthcare in this province.
