The City of Cape Town has officially teamed up with Comic-Con Cape Town for a dynamic trilogy of pop culture events, solidifying their partnership with a resounding Council resolution on event sponsorship. The City’s Events Department has received approval to enter into a three-year agreement, marking the beginning of a collaborative journey that will see Cape Town support Comic Con Cape Town for the 2024, 2025, and 2026 editions.

Comic-Con Cape Town, renowned as the mother of all pop culture events, promises enthusiasts an immersive experience over four days, featuring the best in gaming, comics, shopping, cosplay, and the opportunity to rub shoulders with international celebrities—all under one roof. The newly inked agreement will kick off this year, coinciding with the event scheduled to unfold over the Freedom Day week.

In response to the overwhelming success of the 2023 event, this year’s Comic-Con Cape Town will extend its festivities to a fifth day to accommodate the growing legion of fans. In 2023, the event proved to be a boon for local businesses, providing trading opportunities for approximately 235 exhibitors and drawing a staggering 27,484 attendees. The attendees collectively injected over R24 million into the Cape Town economy during the four-day extravaganza.

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, expressed optimism about the continued success of Comic-Con Cape Town, stating, “The event exceeded all expectations and received the full buy-in of local, national, and international audiences in 2023. As the City, we believe it will keep on building from here, and our support will go a long way in ensuring that Comic Con Cape Town remains a go-to event for people of all age groups. Additionally, it has been encouraging to see the immediate impact the event has had on the economy, and the expectation is that this trend will continue for years to come.”

In a bid to enhance the event’s scale, this year’s organizers are planning to increase the number of exhibitors, offering more opportunities for local businesses to showcase their offerings and fostering growth in attendance numbers. Comic-Con Cape Town 2024 is slated to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre 2 from April 27 to May 1, offering enthusiasts an unparalleled celebration of all things pop culture.
