FREE STATE – In a shocking incident at a truck stop in Ventersburg, an alleged motor vehicle thief was fatally shot by a truck driver, who is now on the loose. The incident occurred on January 20, 2024, at approximately 15:30, prompting an urgent investigation by the local authorities.
The Ventersburg Police were alerted to the shooting, and upon arrival at the scene along the N1 Highway, discovered the lifeless body of a 19-year-old African male. The victim, identified as Mokhethi Hlakoana from Mmamahabane, Ventersburg, sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his neck.
Eyewitnesses revealed that three individuals, identified as boys, had allegedly stolen items from the truck. The truck driver, having confronted the trio, reportedly fired three shots. One of the alleged thieves was struck and succumbed to the injuries at the scene. The other two fled with stolen Darling hair pieces, leaving behind various items scattered on the ground.
A bag filled with the pilfered hair pieces was discovered next to the deceased, leading to its seizure by the authorities. However, the truck driver chose to leave the scene without reporting the incident to the police.
A murder case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to piece together the events that transpired. The next of kin, Mokhethi Hlakoana’s family, was summoned to the scene to identify the deceased.
