South African Wrestling Prodigy Seeks Support to Make Olympic Dreams a Reality

Michael Hawthorne

In a heartfelt letter reaching The Cape Navigator, 19-year-old Matilda Kokera from the Phumlani village, an informal settlement in Lotus River, has appealed to the community and potential sponsors for support in her quest to become the first South African female wrestler to represent the nation at the Olympic Games.

Matilda, an amateur wrestler with an impressive track record, has spent the last seven years honing her skills in the sport. Her achievements include clinching the title of 9-time South African Champion and 9-time Western Province Champion. Having triumphed both nationally and internationally, Matilda has represented the country at the African Championships in Johannesburg and Morocco, specifically in Casablanca in 2022.

Currently, Matilda holds the esteemed title of the best female wrestler in the country within her weight category. Her dedication and prowess have earned her a spot to represent South Africa at the upcoming African Continental Championships (U20, 50kg) and the African and Oceania Olympic Games Qualifier event (Seniors, 50kg). These crucial competitions are scheduled to take place from March 14-19 and March 22-24, 2024, in Alexandria, Egypt.

However, the ambitious young athlete faces a significant hurdle in realizing her dreams – the financial burden associated with participation. Matilda estimates the total cost for her involvement in these competitions to be R57,000. This sum encompasses expenses related to airfare, accommodation, local transport, team clothing, competition license, and insurance.

Understanding the challenges that many aspiring athletes face due to financial constraints, Matilda is reaching out to the community and potential sponsors for support. Anyone willing to contribute or offer assistance can contact Matilda directly at 064 922 7747. Matilda expresses her gratitude in advance for any support received, emphasizing that every contribution, regardless of size, will be deeply appreciated. With the backing of the community, Matilda aims to overcome this financial hurdle and make history by representing South Africa at the highest level of competition – the Olympic Games.
