STRAND – A swift investigation by the Provincial Serious and Violence Crimes Unit has led to the arrests of two suspects in the brutal shooting of a 41-year-old municipal worker just outside the Strand Municipal building on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at around 8:15, leaving the victim, an employee of the City of Cape Town Health Department, dead in the parking lot. Witnesses reported seeing a white Opel Astra fleeing the scene, prompting a comprehensive search by SAPS officials.

“Several witness statements were obtained,” confirmed Western Cape Police Spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk. “Through their invaluable information, a vehicle linked to the suspects was identified.”

Tracing the vehicle led officers to a property in Site C, Khayelitsha, where the white Opel Astra was found and subsequently confiscated. It will be used as evidence in the upcoming court proceedings.

The tragedy adds another layer of sorrow to the family of the deceased, who tragically lost her husband to a shooting in Qumbu, Eastern Cape, just three months ago.

Both suspects, aged 26 and 46, are set to appear in the Strand Magistrates Court today, Wednesday, 10 January 2024, on charges of murder.

The community of Strand remains shaken by this senseless act of violence. While the arrests offer some hope for justice, the pain and loss for the victim’s family is immeasurable. The Cape Navigator extends its deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy.
