SIMONS’S TOWN – In a shocking incident that unfolded on Thursday morning, a cyclist was violently flung after a hit-and-run by an alleged drunk driver near Dixies in Simon’s Town. The incident, captured on CCTV, has left the cycling community and residents on edge during the festive season.
Adrian Ranson, a witness to the harrowing event, took to social media to share the disturbing footage, revealing the callousness of the alleged drunk driver. According to Ranson, the victim, a 26-year-old man, underwent a four-hour operation last night following the accident that occurred yesterday morning.
The alleged drunk driver, identified as a 27-year-old man, was apprehended in Fish Hoek after he passed out behind the wheel of his car. The official response from Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, spokesperson for the Western Cape SAPS, confirmed that a reckless and negligent driving case has been registered for investigation.
“Simon’s Town police registered a reckless and negligent driving case for investigation following an incident in which a 26-year-old man was injured in Main Road Glencairn on Wednesday, 21 December 2023. According to reports, the driver of a VW Polo knocked into the victim and drove off. The victim was taken to a medical facility for treatment. A 27-year-old man was arrested and is due to make a court appearance in the Simon’s Town Magistrates’ court on Wednesday, 27 December 2023,” stated Lt Col Pojie.
The incident has raised concerns among the cycling community, particularly as the cyclist involved had a bright red flashing illuminating light attached. Despite this precaution, the driver reportedly failed to stop and offer assistance, leaving the injured cyclist behind.
A Facebook page called Stay Wider of the Rider posted, “Received CCTV footage of a cyclist who was rammed down by a driver just past the Harbour Bay Mall between Simon’s Town and Glencairn this morning. The driver was caught in Fish Hoek where he passed out behind the wheel of his car. Extremely serious injuries. Please don’t forget that there are many drunk drivers on the road this time of the year. Please take extra care.”
As the festive season brings an influx of travellers and holidaymakers, there is a heightened call for vigilance on the roads. Stay Wider of the Rider’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by drunk drivers during this time of year. Pedestrians and cyclists are urged to exercise extra caution, and motorists are reminded of the responsibility to prioritize road safety.
The accused driver is expected to appear in the Simon’s Town Magistrates’ court on Wednesday, 27 December 2023, facing charges related to reckless and negligent driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving under the influence. The injured cyclist continues to receive medical treatment, and the suspect remains behind bars while the investigation continues.
